'Dignify/Degrade' by Peter McAteer

20.00

Peter is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist from Dublin with a focus on painting, illustration, and tattooing. Peter’s fine art practice centres on his own experience navigating the world as a gay trans man, as well as generally on renouncing shame, reclaiming self-acceptance through self-expression, and embracing radical queer sexuality.

This piece, inspired by layouts of gay porn ads from the 1970s and 1980s, references the contradiction that exists between a type of sex or sexuality typically being considered demeaning or shameful, and the strength and power that it takes for an individual to engage with that type of sex or sexuality shamelessly because it makes them feel good. The thesis is that there is purity in filth, and dignity in degradation.

This piece was made in response to the theme of 'So Way Bad It's Good' for the exhibition of the same name, at Hen's Teeth in April 2025.
