Peatícáinn ZINE - 1Eurofiddy
''I am a self-taught photographer from Kerry working under the handle 1eurofiddy. I use mostly film photography in my work. The bulk of my work consists of documentary photography with a focus on the changing face of Ireland with a particular focus on groups which practice fading traditions, drawing inspiration from both old and new with a blend of social realism and iconography. My most recent exhibition ‘Who Fears to Speak’ explored how republicanism shapes the identities of young people from Derry, with a particular focus on some of their unique traditions. ''
This piece was inspired by my Granny, someone who heavily influenced my interest in horse fairs, animals and old Ireland. ‘Peatícáinn’ is a term of endearment used by my Granny usually to describe something cute and innocent. My granny brought me to horse fairs as a child where I would hear her mutter the word 'peatícáinn' when peering into boxes of birds or cooing at pups being sold from mens pockets. Usually, a stoic and practical woman, trying to get the best deal from the men, she turned soft around the smaller animals at the fair. The last time I visited her she was her usual self, giving out about men and other ‘amadáin’ , reminding me to toughen up and get on with things. Meanwhile her newest stray cat called ‘precise’ stretched out on her lap doing little meows to which Granny responded ‘you’re alright peatícáin’.
