What if we're fake and wrestling is real? A3 PRINT - Conor Nolan
This zine is an exploration into illustrating professional wrestling subject matter, with a specific focus on the progression of Cactus Jack through the iconic King of the Deathmatch tournament by IWA Japan in 1995. This particular brand of deathmatch wrestling rose to prominence in IWA Japan as competitors put through themselves through physical punishment by means of implementing barbed wire, thumbtacks and more in their matches. The dichotomy of this spectacle, where results are pre-determined and wrestlers are not actually competing, although the violence, injury and bloodshed is undeniably real, is what makes the subject so intriguing for me. Excerpts are taken from Mick Foley’s 1998 autobiography “Have a Nice Day” which give insight into the planning and execution of these matches.
Conor is an illustrator and printmaker and one half of Way Bad Press.
